Alvin M. "Tex" Johnston (August 18, 1914 to October 29, 1998) was an American jet-age test pilot for Bell Aircraft and the Boeing Company.
On August 18, 1914, Alvin "Tex" Johnston was born to his parents Alva and Ella Johnston, who were farmers in Admire, Kansas.
At 11 years old in 1925, Tex made his first flight when a barnstormer landed near his home. On that day, he made the decision to become a pilot. At the age of 15, he made his first solo flight after receiving mechanics and piloting instruction. Once he graduated from high school, Tex began barnstorming himself. He later returned to school to study engineering, but dropped out in 1939 before he actually finished the courses required to obtain his degree.
In 1935, he married his wife, Delores. He became an instructor at the Civilian Pilot Training Program. When the United States entered WWII, Tex transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corps Ferry Command.
December of 1942, Tex went to Bell Aircraft as a flight test engineer, flying the P-39 Airacobra and the XP-63 during their prototype phases. He also flew the XP-59 and the first US jet. He earned his nickname, "Tex" because he always wore his Stetson cowboy hat and cowboy boots while on the flight line.
Once WWII had ended, Tex bought and modified two surplus Airacobras to enter and win the Thompson Trophy at the 1946 National Air Races.
On May 22, 1947, after having helped design the rocket-propelled Bell X-1, Tex got to fly it. He stayed on at the program as a design advisor for the modifications and trim controls because he had discovered that they were not usable in the configuration they were manufactured at high subsonic speeds. On the Discovery Channel in 1991, he told of his experiences in the rocket plane for the documentary series "Frontiers of Flight" stating "...the airplane was just gorgeous" and that its 18 G design was "indestructible".
In July 1948, he became a test pilot for Boeing, flying the B-47 Stratojet and then piloting the first flight of the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress prototype.
Tex is most known for doing a barnstormer style barrel roll-over maneuver in Boeing's revolutionary 367-80 jet in a demo flight over Lake Washington outside of Seattle on August 7, 1955. The maneuver was caught on film and has been frequently seen on Discovery Wings cable channel in a three-minute short as a part of the Touched by History series when the channel was still on the air.
Tex was called before the then-president of Boeing, Bill Allen, for rolling the plane. He was asked what he thought he was doing, and responded, "I was selling airplanes". He kept his position as a test pilot and did not get into any legal trouble for his actions. His flying style and cowboy type dress is said to be the inspiration for Dr. Strangelove character Maj. T. J. "King" Kong, who, in rodeo style, rode a balky nuclear weapon to its target.
Tex was the assistant program manager for Boeing's X-20 Dyna-Soar program in Seattle, Washington from 1960 to 1963.
He then became Boeing's Atlantic Test Center Manager in Cocoa Beach, Florida from 1964 to 1968, working on two programs, the Minuteman missile and the Lunar Orbiter designed for the Apollo missions.
He also worked with Nasa helping to manage Saturn and Apollo missions.
Tex left Boeing in 1968 to manage Tex Johnston, Inc., Total-In-Flight-Simulator Inc. and Aero Spacelines, that handled the making and certification of the oversized cargo plane known as the Pregnant Guppy. He became the director and chief pilot of Stanley Aviation Corporation in 1975, focusing on personnel escape systems (ejection seats). In 1993, he was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame.
He took his first flight in 1925, at the age of eleven, when a barnstormer landed near his home. On that day, he decided that he would become a pilot. After flight training, he soloed his first flight at the age of 15.
In his adult years, he dropped out of college before completing his engineering courses. Then Tex Johnston worked for Bell Aircraft and Boeing as a test pilot. He is famous for his Boeing 707 and B-52 test flights. He was also a flight instructor in the Civilian Pilot Training Program, and the U.S. Army Air Corps Ferry Command.
Johnston was known for his larger than life personality. He received the nickname “Tex” because of the stetson hat and cowboy boots he liked to wear. But Johnston is even better known for executing an aileron roll maneuver with a Boeing 367-80–the Boeing 707 prototype…a giant airliner!
As this video shows, the whole stunt was filmed, and Tex was called into the office of his supervisor. When his boss asked him what he thought he was doing rolling his plane in the air, Tex replied, “I’m selling airplanes.” With a witty reply, his job was saved. The Boeing 707 went on to be a very successful airliner and derivatives were selected to be air refueling tankers for US and allied forces.
Tex Johnston died in 1998, at the age of 84.
We're sort of ashamed of the fact that even though we have been doing this for years now, we never saw this video. We knew the story behind it. We've seen pictures. Never did we think "hey, maybe there's a clip of that on Youtube." Well, there is and we finally found it.
Most of you probably know this already, but we'll go over it really quickly anyway. Ray Hanna is sort of an aviation legend. Born in New Zealand, he flew for the RAF (Royal Air Force) and was so good that he was actually one of the founding members of the Red Arrows.

Think the Blue Angels of the United Kingdom. Many might actually argue that they're better than the Blues but we won't touch that subject. We did once and it was a disaster (beers were involved.)
As for this particular flyby, it was performed by Hanna in 1987 for a show called Piece of Cake. It centered around a group of RAF members of the Hornet Squadron. In one of the scenes, a “rebellious” pilot wanted to show the brass where to stick it, so he pulled this stunt.

Another Russian Fighter Intercepted A US Navy Aircraft
A Russian Su-27 fighter jet has intercepted a US Navy EP-3E Aries plane over the Black Sea near Russian airspace and escorted it away in a safe manner, the Russian Defence Ministry said.
Meanwhile, the US Navy announced that a US reconnaissance aircraft was intercepted earlier on Monday by a Russian fighter jet while flying in international airspace over the Black Sea, Xinhua news agency reported.

The US reconnaissance aircraft was spotted approaching Russia’s airspace and was immediately identified by the Su-27 fighter jet “at a safe distance,” Russian news agencies reported, citing a defence ministry statement.
After reporting back to the communications intelligence unit, the fighter jet escorted it away from the Russian airspace “in compliance with all security and safety requirements,” it said.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the fighter jet returned to its home base after the US plane altered its flight course away from Russian airspace.
The US Navy, in a statement, called the interaction as “determined to be unsafe”, saying the Russian SU-27 conducted “a high speed pass directly in front of the mission aircraft, putting at risk the pilots and crew”.
Also on Monday, a Pentagon spokesperson said that the Russian jet came “very, very close” to the US EP-3 aircraft, adding that it made an additional pass after activating its afterburners to create more turbulence.
There was no communication between the two planes and the encounter lasted about 25 minutes, Spokesperson Eric Pahon told reporters at the Pentagon.
